Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a collection of techniques used to improve communication and personal development. It is based on the idea that we all see the world somewhat differently, based on input to our brains from our five senses and influences from past events. We form beliefs based on this input and memories of events, and sometimes our beliefs about ourselves and others are negative and cause us problems. A therapist or coach can give us a new, more positive view about our feelings and beliefs, and resolve past issues that have been recorded in our subconscious minds.
I use NLP techniques to change negative emotions to positive emotions, and also to reduce or eliminate physical pain. We subconsciously experience pain as having characteristics like shape, color, size, and motion. By changing these elements, we can change the pain signals carried by our nervous system. Some of the same techniques can be used to improve our emotions.
If you go through the world looking for excellence, you will find excellence. If you go through the world looking for problems, you will find problems. Or as the Arabic saying puts it, “What a piece of bread looks like depends on whether you’re hungry or not.” — Joseph O’Connor
We all have beliefs and expectations from our personal experience; it is impossible to live without them. Since we have to make some assumptions, they might as well be ones that allow us freedom, choice, and fun in the world, rather than ones that limit us.
